Continue using Magento 1 thanks to OpenMage

Reifenwerk Heidenau – B2B Shop

The traditional company Reifenwerk Heidenau has been producing tyres with the quality feature “Made in Germany” for more than 70 years. The core competences of the premium brand “HEIDENAU” lie in the manufacturing areas of cross-ply tyres for motorbikes and classic cars up to industrial applications and agriculture. More than 550 different tyre designs are manufactured in the tyre factory by around 200 employees and sold in over 40 countries. Sales channels include a Magento B2B online shop where the entire range is available for business customers.

“Together with igniti, we found the best solution for us: By migrating to OpenMage, we can continue to use Magento 1. After the quick implementation, we are happy that the shop now meets all standards again and we can optimise it further.”

The challenge

With the “end of life” of Magento 1, Reifenwerk Heidenau, like many other companies, had to make an important decision. How can the B2B Onlineshop based on Magento 1 continue to be operated securely, stably and PCI-compliant? The choices included migrating from Magento 1 to Magento 2, switching to another shop system, or migrating from Magento 1 to OpenMage.

With the official end of Magento 1 support in June 2020, the version will no longer be supported by Magento or Adobe. This means that this shop system will still be functional, but no more updates will be published. Since no more security gaps will be fixed from this point on, continuing to operate the B2B shop is risky.

It was not a Magento 2 update. Why? A migration to Magento 2 or another shop system was not desired by Reifenwerk Heidenau. The reason for this was the complexity. Due to major differences in the system architecture between Magento 1 and 2, no automatic update is possible. Instead of a simple update, a complex relaunch would be necessary. There are also many factors to consider when choosing a new shop system. This fundamental decision should not be made hastily, which is why it should still be postponed in this case.

The goal was therefore: To continue using Magento 1 while complying with the security standards. A solution had to be found with which the platform could continue to be operated and suitably developed for the next few years.

The solution

The community project Open Mage LTS is the best solution here, so that the previous investments in Magento 1 continue to pay off. OpenMage aims to keep Magento 1 usable with patches and bug fixes and to guarantee long-term support (LTS) with the help of developers with years of Magento 1 experience. The most important concern of OpenMage is to close security gaps and thus make the online shop secure for shop operators and their customers. The community-driven solution enables Reifenwerk Heidenau to continue operating a Magento-based e-commerce platform.

The migration from Magento 1 to OpenMage laid the foundation for further development and support. In addition to the parallel server move, 62 changes to the Magento core (core hacks) were also resolved during the migration and returned to the standard.

The result with OpenMage

Reifenwerk Heidenau can continue to use the B2B online shop based on OpenMage and has restored the requirement basis for PCI-compliant security standards. All existing and largely automated processes that are crucial for the smooth running of order management and distribution have been stabilised and can be better monitored. This also applies to deployment, the continuous provision of code changes, as the code can be delivered in a better structured way, which is directly noticeable in an average deployment time of one minute. The update also makes feature requests and improvements to processes, e.g. automated imports into the shop system, possible again and paves the way for further developments to meet the constantly growing requirements of the trade and Reifenwerk Heidenau’s partners.
